Drum Magnet Description:

The GREENSORT Drum Magnet is engineered for the recycling industry of secondary metals. It processes mixed shredded scrap metal and efficiently separates ferrous metals. Usually equipped with a vibratory feeding system, it is widely deployed in shredding&sorting lines for scrap aluminum, scrap steel, auto shredder residue (ASR) and shredded home appliance materials.

Magnets are arranged only along one half circumference of the drum, while the other half has no magnetic field. Ferrous material is attracted to the magnet equipped semicircular surface and rotates with the drum. When ferrous material moves to the non magnetic semicircular zone, magnetic force disappears and material discharges by gravity. Unlike full magnetic drums that rely on scraper plates for forced discharge, this design eliminates material jamming and abrasion.

Structure:

Vibratory Feeder Unit Consists of a vibratory trough and vibratory motors with spring isolated support. It delivers uniform thin layer material feeding onto the drum magnet's separation zone. Stacked material which would degrade separation accuracy is avoided. Amplitude and feed rate are adjustable for different throughput capacities.

Drum Magnet Main Unit

Drum shell: Wear resistant carbon steel cylinder with surface anti abrasion treatment. The internal semi circular permanent magnet assembly remains stationary while the outer shell rotates. Magnets occupy approximately 180° of the drum circumference.  

Drive system: Helical gear geared motor directly drives drum rotation. Rotation speed is frequency convertible to suit various material particle sizes.  

Separation chute: Split discharge hopper with dedicated outlets for ferrous and non ferrous fractions. Material diversion is achieved through magnetic field transition. No scraper plate is required.

Frame & Protective Housing Heavy duty steel support frame painted in GREENSORT standard industrial grass green finish. Perforated protective covers safeguard rotating components while enabling heat dissipation. Lifting lugs are fitted for hoisting and installation. Modular design supports standalone operation or integration into complete shredding and sorting lines.

Working Principle:

Mixed shredded material is evenly spread onto the rotating drum surface by the vibratory feeder.

In the magnet fitted semicircular zone, the stationary internal permanent magnet field penetrates the drum shell and holds ferrous material against the outer surface. Non magnetic fractions such as aluminum, copper and plastics receive no magnetic attraction and fall forward to the non ferrous discharge outlet.

Ferrous material adheres to the shell and travels to the non magnetic semicircular segment, where no magnet blocks are installed and magnetic attraction vanishes completely.

Ferrous material loses magnetic holding force and drops by gravity into the dedicated ferrous material hopper to complete separation.

Special application:

Drum magnet with vibrating feeder pan design for the protection of Eddy current separator. This drum magnet GREENSORT design it  by half magnet system, which can remove most of fine and middle size ferrous particles. we advise overband magnet or big drum magnetic separator to remove big and much volume ferrous metal in front stage. So after this small drum magnet, all metals will be removed, then no ferrous metal will missed into the belt of eddy current separator. otherwise the missed ferrous metal will cause high temperature when it stucked in the surface of the magnetic rotor of ECS. And it will burn out the belt.

because its a half magnet system and with small diameter 320mm,  makes it cheaper and useful in the metal sorting plant. As it can be put inside easily.

please do consult our engineer for the magnet intensity, tell engineer what material you are going to process, and what size of material looks like, as not always high magnet intensity is good for sorting material you want. If the material size is fine, powder will lead to magnetic agglomeration(which impact the sorting performance). we should be carefully to think about the measures to avoid the phenomena.

Technical Notes:

Material requirement: Loose shredded feedstock. Vibratory feeding shall guarantee thin layer material spread. Excessive material bed thickness impairs magnetic penetration and separation performance.  Multi stage semi magnetic drums can be connected in series for enhanced ferrous purification. May be combined with subsequent eddy current separators and XRT sorters to build full range metal sorting processing lines.
